How to Make Your Own Safe + Natural Cleaning Products

Essential oils not only provide a natural fragrance (buh bye artificial scents), they also help kill some bacteria, mold, and even viruses. Try these homemade recipes to make natural cleaning products that aren’t just great for your home, they’re also better on your body and our planet!

Here’s a rundown of the things you’ll need to make these items yourself. Luckily, you probably have these supplies around your house already!

  1. Microfiber cloth
  2. Glass Jar
  3. Spray bottles
  4. White vinegar
  5. Distilled water
  6. Baking soda
  7. Lemon essential oil
  8. Tea Tree essential oil (melaleuca)
  9. Optional oils: white fir, lime, grapefruit, peppermint
  10. Unscented liquid Castile soap
  11. Olive oil
  12. Rubbing alcohol
  13. Cornstarch

Natural Carpet Cleaner

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 10 drops of tea tree essential oil
  • 10-15 drops of lemon essential oil
  • 1 glass jar

Mix all of the ingredients together and put into your jar (a mason jar or any other glass jar with a lid will work). Let the ingredients sit for at least 12 hours before using. When you’re ready to use it, dust it across your carpet, let it sit for 15-20 minutes and then vacuum it up.

Natural Mildew Spray

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 spray bottle
  • 5 drops of lemon essential oil
  • 5 drops of tea tree or white fir essential oil
  • White Vinegar
  • Spray Bottle

This spray will not only smell amazing it feels great on your lungs and can help keep your bathroom mildew free.

Natural Soft Scrub

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 3 tbsp. liquid Castile soap (unscented)
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 15 drops or lemon essential oil
  • 1 glass jar

Blend everything together and it should form a paste. To use, apply a small amount to a wet microfiber cloth and scrub away! If you are working with some really tough stains, let the soft scrub sit directly on the surface for a few minutes before wiping off. You can store the scrub in a jar.

Natural Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Baking soda or white vinegar
  • 2-3 drops grapefruit or lemon essential oil

There are many benefits to making your own natural toil cleaner. Just think how much pollution gets added to our oceans from regular cleaning products being used to clean toilets! Just pour some white vinegar or sprinkle some baking soda directly into your toilet. Then add a couple drops of either grapefruit or lemon essential oil. You’ll want to let in sit in the bowl for about 10 minutes and then scrub it clean with a toilet brush. And voila! An ocean-friendly product!

Natural Wood Floor Cleaner

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 spray bottle
  • 2 cups distilled water
  • 2 tbsp. white vinegar
  • 10 drops of lemon essential oil

Add all of the natural ingredients into your spray bottle (make sure you shake it a bit to make sure it’s blended). When you’re ready to use it, just spray directly onto your floors and use a damp mop.

Natural All-purpose Cleaner

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 spray bottle
  • 2 cups of white vinegar
  • 1 cup water (regular or distilled)
  • 15-20 drops of your favorite disinfecting essential oil (lemon, melaleuca, lime, or peppermint are some common favorites)
